Construction Strip Minky Quilt

While at Winterfest we met Patty Howard, the designer behind a fabulous line of purses and bags. We have some of her models hanging in the store (including the Real MaCoy bag and a darling scripture bag); they are sure to be must haves in your pattern collections.

One of our darling customers came in to show us a Valentine card she had made using our packages of die-cut hearts. They were so sweet that several employees bought a package of hearts to take home that very day to make their own Valentines!

One of my personal favorite new items is the "Lotsa Love" bolster pillow. I had so much fun making up the model for the shop, the embellishments are the perfect finishing touch (the picture does NOT do it justice)!

Judy whipped up a Charming Log Cabin quilt using the Fiona's Fancy fabric line by Lila Tueller for Riley Blake. We think it turned out just beautiful!

Valentine Panel Ideas!

I took home a Valentine panel from the Chemistry line by Cosmo Cricket, and came up with a couple of fun ideas. What do you think....?

Simply cut out the cards and a backing to the same measurement (I also added a piece of batting in between the two layers of fabric to give some stability). Sew right sides together leaving a small opening in the bottom. Clip the corners, turn right side out and press. Top stitch around all four sides. Cut a 9" piece of ribbon, find the center of the ribbon and then sew to the center of the card. Tie a piece of candy in the ribbon and your are done!

The same method was used for the jar wrap, only add a piece of elastic in one short end and a button on the other short end. Stretch the elastic around the button to secure the wrap around the jar. I hope you enjoy these ideas and they inspire you to create some 'love' for the special people in your life!

Basic Grey Canvas Sampler Boards

You may have seen the blank Sampler Boards by Basic Grey. We have them in a large variety of patterns and sizes.

I chose a 8 x 10 canvas and the fabric line "Ruby" by Camille Roskelly for Moda.

It is such a great way to showcase some of your favorite findings, fabrics and yes, your stitches!

Use a variety of embroidery stitches and using 3 ply floss stitch around each fabric circle.

Make a cute tag, wrap it around a pin and glue to create a great pin to weave through one of your circles.

Buttons - not just one button but a whole pile of buttons!

Gather a strip of folded fabric to create a cute ruffled flower and add an old button in the center.

For the one I made for my sis Sherie I used Sweetwater's new line, Hometown.

In total I have made 8 boards (I have a lot of Sisters), each one unique.

Just like everyone one in this creative world, I am addicted to Pinterest. My latest fab find, thanks to some wonderful customers LeeAnn, Diana and Janice, are little girl tutus made using crocheted headbands as the waste band instead of plain elastic! PURE GENIUS! Just take a look....

Simply do a search on Pinterest for tutus and you will find pages of inspiration! I hadn't seen one made using scraps of fabric before this one, and it is by far my favorite!! I can't wait to give it a try :)

Oh, and of course you can find the crocheted headbands at Pine Needles for only $0.99 each, and we have them in a dozen different colors.

Valentines Already?!?

Fabric arriving for a holiday that is months away is the craziest part of having a quilting store! And right now is no exception! We are already receiving our Valentine fabrics, and haven't even had time to finish our Christmas projects! I know I am preaching to the choir :)

But we all know that if we don't buy the fabric when it comes out, we won't find it when the holiday is near and we have finally decided exactly what we plan to do with it. So in the spirit of Valentines, I want to make sure everyone has seen Sandy's latest design in her 'Wonky Series.' It is called Wonky Love and it is made using a lot of the fabric line Ruby from Moda. You can't get any better than a FABULOUS DESIGN combined with A FABULOUS FABRIC LINE! Oh wait, yes you can. Tea Towel Tutorial

Hi Gals! I am back again with a fun and FASTULOUS (fast/fabulous) tutorial. I am always in search for a fun neighbor gift and this fits that to a Tea. Or maybe you just need a fashionable towel for yourself to wipe your holiday grimies on. Hope you enjoy!

Supplies List:

1 tea towel (I am using a Indo teal towel which measures 20 1/2" x 28")
5 - 5" red squares
1 - 1 1/2" x 22" red
5 - green buttons (I am using a variety of fabulous Riley Blake buttons)

Instructions:

First, I must say that I did not think up this idea, rather I saw it on Pinterest (ADDICTED, I'm just sayin') which took me to this link http://www.kdquilts.com/2011/10/dress-it-up-buttercup.html and then I tweaked it a bit. I had some left over 5" charm squares and so I changed up the measurements to use them.

Sew here, is how it goes...

For each 5" square fold in half diagonally and press. Fold in half again and press to create a prairie point.

Lay five prairie points across tea towel with the raw edges being approximately 4" from the bottom. Pin in place.

Prepare 1 1/2" x 22" strip by folding each end in and pressing so that the finished length measures the width of your towel. Press under each long edge 1/2".
Pin over prairie points.

Sew in place.

Sew a button at the tip of each point.

That's it...you have a fastulous home-made gift!

The Tale of Three Trees Tutorial

I just posted the following tutorial on my Pine Mountain blog and wanted to be sure to share it with all my Pine Needles friends. Read on and enjoy!

Once upon a mountain top, three little trees stood and dreamed of what they wanted to become when they grew up. The first little tree looked up at the stars and said......

That is the start of One of my favorite books for Christmas, or really it is such a beautiful folktale for for any time. If you have not read this book - please do, it will inspire and uplift you.

And today, in honor of one of my favorite books I hope you enjoy my gift to you, the paper piece pattern 'Three Trees"

I love the odd angles of the trees, and the folk art affect of the quilting.

Download and print pattern
Paper piece project using pattern provided, white background, and three different green fabrics. (See tutorial below if you are unfamiliar with paper piecing)

Sandwich paper pieced top, batting and background fabric.
Draw lines for tree trunks.

Chain stitch trunks using 2 ply brown floss.

Using 2 ply red floss quilt a running stitch through all layers along each seam as illustrated.

Frame, make an ornament, mug rug, or small pillow.

If you are not familiar with paper pieceing - here is a fabulous tutorial found on Youtube.

Wonky Winter is here!

I am so excited to show you my newest quilt

"Wonky Winter".

I have enjoyed every process in my Wonky series. A bit of piecing, wonky style of course, a bit of applique, just the right amount of embroidery and hello, hexagons - Love 'em. For this design I wanted a quilt that I could enjoy at Christmas but also thru the remaining cold winter nights.

This is the companion to my two quilts Wonky Wildflowers and Wonky Fall Foliage.

Coming in January is the final quit in this series.

New Embroidery is Here!

We are so excited to finally have Sarah Jane's new embroidery patterns in the shop! Can you believe how sweet! We also have her new line of fabric Children at Play for Michael Miller. I cannot wait to get started on one of the embroidery designs, the only problem is which one???

Also in the shop are pre-cuts for Camille Roskelly's FAAABULOUS line Ruby! I am starting my own Ruby project this weekend. Yah, can't wait to play with this line!

These are the newest cuddle fabrics that have been released by Shannon Fabrics. These are literally TO DIE FOR!!! We have not stopped salivating since they arrived last week. And our fun & cute friend/customer, who also has impeccable taste, could not resist this morning :-) and we completely understand!!!!! Hi everyone! This is Sandy coming to you with a fresh tutorial from Sandy's Studio.

Are you like me and just can't get enough buttons!

I've got them in jars and drawers, and hanging on my design board!

And today I'll show you a fun way to bring them into your home decore. This idea came from my Sis, Sherie, who presented all the sisters (there are 11 of us - 6 sisters and 5 sis-in-laws!) with a button blooming plant at a Mad Hatter tea party this year.

Here we are in our hats

and here are a few of the Blooming Beauty take-home favors

So.....Let's get started!

Here is what you will need:

assorted buttons (the fabulous buttons in the dish here are from Riley Blake and are available at the store)
a spool of green florest wire (I used 22ga).
a small plant (I found a $3.99 ivy plant at Smith's grocery store)

Here is what you'll do:

Stack your buttons - I like to stack 'em high but you can put as few or as many as you like

Feed a length of florist wire up through the button stack,

fold over and back down through the stack and out the back.

Twist tightly and continue twisting the wire together until you have one stem.

Repeat with remaining button stacks and stick each button flower into your plant

WahLah! Cute as a button!

Gluber Glam

.Do you remember the other day when I told you about the new Glubers? Well, today I want to show you a glam project I created in a matter of 10 minutes....

You will need a Gluber disc and a length of box-pleated grobrain ribbon (the length will depend on the size of Gluber used)

Remove one side of the film from your Gluber exposing the sticky disc.

Beginning on the outside of the disc adhere the box-pleated ribbon around the disc.

Continue working inside the outer row of ribbon towards the center of the disc.

Continue to work inside until you have covered the gluber disc leaving a small dime size area uncovered and cut ribbon.

You have created the base of your glammy flower!

This is what it will look like on the back.

I used the I-Top wonder tool to make a fabric covered button and adhered it to the center of the flower. Ta-da. What do you think?

I have been wanting to create this block for some time. I love each unique version I see. For mine I decided to follow a traditional color wheel.

I printed my color wheel and used it to select my fabrics

Then got to work paper piecing

using the template found here, and the great tutorial found here

Now I just need to decide what to do with it, any suggestions???

Flannel Board Characters Tutorial

Holly made a new flannel board to sit at your machine when designing quilt blocks. I took a look and got another idea for making it double duty!

There are so many fantastic fabrics with great juvenile characters that would make fun flannel board characters to play with. I know it's all about electronics but I like to occasionally take a step back to a simpler time when your imagination took you everywhere you could want to go.... maybe even on a trip to africa for safari!

To make flannel board characters you will need:

Print fabric (I used a fun Bongo Jungle Alexander Henry canvas)
Peltex (a very stiff fusible interfacing)
Heat N Bond (or other fusible web)
Flannel

Step 1:
From your print fabric cut individual shapes leaving adequate border.

Step 2:
Measure your shape. Use this measurement and cut 1 - peltex, 1 - heat-n-bond, and 1 - flannel.

Step 3:
Iron print fabric to fusible side of Peltex following manufactures instructions.

Step 4:

Iron Heat N Bond fusible web to back of peltex.

Step 5:
Remove paper backing from fusible web. Iron flannel to this unit.

Step 6:
Cut out shape!

Several months ago, I arranged with Allison of Cluck Cluck Sew, to bring home her quilts from Quilt Market and display them in our shop. They are now hanging in the shop, and daily I look at them and cannot decide which I want to make next!! It is such a difficult decision, you will see :) Right before Quilt Market Allison showed this version of Kaleidoscope on her blog and I fell in LOVE! It is made using Summer House by Moda (due out this Aug), what do you think, trust me it is even better in person (having it quilted helps too!)? And another I was excited to see in person, was this version of Skipping Squares shown on her blog in April. Of Course I Will Help You....

A couple of months ago, I read a post on a very talented persons' blog (http://www.sarahjanestudios.com/) asking for help getting ready for Spring International Quilt Market. I contacted her immediately and offered my assistance (I mean of course I offered to help, I would have been crazy not to). In addition to stitching a model of one of her embroidery patterns, I volunteered to sew models for her using her new fabric line. Well five days ago, Sarah received yardage of her fabric line called Children at Play for Michael Miller Fabrics; just in time to whip up some items to display in her booth at Quilt Market. Meadow is the beautiful colorway I had the pleasure of sewing into a darling quilt and patchwork pillow for her booth. But I have to admit, it is the boy fabrics I cannot wait to get my hands on (as I have 3 boys of my own)!!

I just love Quilt Market, it is so fun to see all the fun new fabrics that we will be able to purchase in a couple of months. However, I do not like the two months or more wait until I can actually have the new fabrics in my hands!

This fabric line is just one of the things you can look forward to in the next few months. Sandy will be releasing EIGHT, yes eight, new patterns at Quilt Market. So next week we will have them in the shop for all to enjoy! Included in these eight patterns, is a new seasonal series that is ABSOLUTELY TO DIE FOR, a pattern for some 'wearables', a new layer cake/charm square friendly quilt pattern, and more !!!!! So stay tuned, because I will be showing a sneak peek later in the week!

Things are cookin' at the store!

Things were cookin' on Saturday and the store wasn't even open yet! Over the last month our employees all became Moda Certified and received their Moda aprons and pins. The aprons were cute but I knew our employees could really spice them up, so we had ourselves a little contest.

Rules: Take your apron and do whatever you want with it, as long as "Moda Certified" was still visible.

So, yesterday we had a fun employee breakfast where each employee (except Wendy and Cecilia who were not able to be with us) unveiled their creations! Everyone voted (secret ballot of course) for their top 3, points were awarded and the winner of $50 and supreme bragging rights was announced!

and the winner was Valayne! Work it girl! I think her fabulous sweetheart neckline pur her right over the top!

Truth be told - our employees are all winners!

In Need of a Quick Baby Gift?

This quilted fabric makes a darling baby quilt with the addition of a little applique and some contrast binding. I didn't know what name had been chosen for this little baby, so I enlarged the elephant shown on the fabric and appliqued that instead of a baby's initial (like in this quilt by Thimble Blossoms). I was really happy with how this turned out. What do you think?

Hi everyone! I was so excited when I saw this book at the shop the other day. I love Oliver + S patterns, from their clean and classic designs to their adorable little paper dolls that come with the patterns. This book, called founder Liesl Gibson, is full of 20 of the most precious things to make for children. Out of the 20 accessories and toys in this book, I want to make all 20! It was hard to pick one to start with, but the bucket hats, little red riding hood cape, and penguin backpack are my favorites. Oliver + S patterns are always very detailed and well written, and I love the fact that they list their difficulty level, so I know if it will be a quick project or a new challenge. At the end of the book you'll find a set of the Oliver + S little boy and girl paper dolls, along with clothes to dress them in from the book, "A little something extra to keep young ones occupied as you stitch up new items for their wardrobes!" (taken from Oliver + S book jacket) If you have children in your lives you that you love to sew for, I highly recomend picking up a copy of this darling book.

Home of the Brave Quilt Project

A group of quilters from Utah would like to give memorial quilts to the families of Utah soldiers who have given their lives defending freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Here's what you can do to help. Create a 12.5" block from red, white and blue fabrics, OR you can sew a 12" finished Civil War Block using either Thimbleberries or Civil War reproduction fabrics and return them to Pine Needles. Whether you can make one block or ten, EVERY BLOCK COUNTS, so please consider contributing to this cause.
It takes approximately 15 blocks for each quilt.

You may also donate batting or Civil War reproduction fabrics to Pat Moseman (pmoseman@msn.com).

Tiny Town Block of the Month

I am so excited to be able to show you block #6 in our block of the month called Tiny Town by Bunny Hill Designs. This adorable block includes a charming birdhouse and a wonderful old-fashioned gas tank and truck. And, since this block traveled with me to Arizona and back, it seemed completely appropriate that part of the block was about transportation!!! If you are wondering where the birdhouse openings and doorknobs are. . . wonder no longer. They have been left off until after the quilting is complete.

I hope you have fun adding another block to your very own tiny town!

Nap Time!

This weekend I had a couple of good excuses to stay inside. The first, 6 inches of new snow when I awoke this morning. Second, I am taking care of my niece and nephews while my sisters are on vacation with their spouses. But even with a couple of extra kiddos running around, nap time was still a success for me! Hattie is modeling my newest display piece for the shop. It's a little big for her right now, but by the time she actually gets to wear it, it will fit perfectly! The pattern is Maya by Modkid Sewing Patterns. and is made out of knit fabric by Michael Miller Fabrics. It was soooo easy and quick to make, I was pleasantly surprised. The knit fabric was fabulous to work with as well, and didn't shrink nearly as much as the warning on the bolt said it would. This is the second of the Modkid patterns I have made, and they are very well written, and WONDERFUL to make!

I don't know about you, but I L-O-V-E, love buttons and trims. I buy them, hoard them, use some and others save for who knows why but they are just too fabulous to use! So each time Riley Blake Designs introduces another button or trim to their portfolio, I am DELIGHTED! The buttons range in sizes 1" to 2" in diameter. The ribbons are 5/8" wide. They are DELICIOUS!

38 Bolts of Heaven!

Today Greg, our UPS delivery man, delivered four boxes containing 38 bolts of Michael Miller fabrics. Be still my heart, I was thrilled! Hi all! I finally feel like I have been able to catch my breath after returning from HQNA Winterfest. Holly and I had SO MUCH FUN with the ladies there and were lucky to have our mom join us for a few days. Food, fabric, family & friends, what more could a girl ask for?

I had 36 ladies in my Mystery Stitches class where we made this Dresden Project Case. Perfect for holding your applique, embroidery, or quilting supplies.

One of my all time FAVORITE movies is Pillow Talk. Come on, Rock Hudson, Doris Day, love, laughter - who woudn't love this movie! If you have not seen it YOU MUST!!!

Happy Days Are Here Again!

Any day when we get to receive fabric at the shop is a HAPPY DAY! We NEVER tire of seeing new fabric, and the joy NEVER diminishes when we cut fat quarters from a brand new bolt of fabric. Well yesterday our UPS man played a trick on us. He came into the shop carrying two SMALL packages :( and had us sign for them. Well we were expecting a large delivery, so a little disappointed we told him that "maybe you will want to call in sick tomorrow because you should have a truckload of packages for us." He replied, "oh, tomorrow is it, are you sure?" and walked out the door. We stood there puzzled because we checked to see how many packages his little computer said we were signing for, and it showed only two packages. Next thing we know he is walking in the door with NINE VERY LARGE BOXES of what else? FABRIC! Over 80 bolts of fabric to be exact! The more than 80 bolts included fabric from the lines by Moda called Sunkissed, Charlevoix and Chrysalis, and the cutest cupcake fabric EVER by Alexander Henry! Our UPS man is a trickster, but we love him anyway. Yes, happy days are here yet again!
